Academic advising is the responsibility of each
faculty.
All university instructors who take part in education in each
discipline offer advising in their field for students during
office hours. Office hours are usually announced through
postings at the institute or department. In addition, academic
advisors for each programme are designated in the
faculties. They can offer advice for specific questions
about the study programme or discipline. It is
recommended that you make an appointment or call ahead if you
require advising services. The academic advisors can counsel
students about possible specialisations, study technologies,
selection of and enrolment in classes that contribute to the
student’s goals, participation in projects, degree progress
evaluations, transferring to a different programme (discipline)
or to a different institution, exam preparation, degree
options, possible supplementary studies in the faculties, and
taking exams early, among other concerns.
The academic advising programme strives to advise students
during their entire course of study.
Important times and events that may prompt students to seek an
advisor include:
• The beginning of studies at the end of the
first year
• The end of the basic studies/ foundational
course (Grundstudium)
• Before and after internships or co-ops
• The beginning of projects and large
academic assignments
• Preparation for temporary study at another
university in Germany or abroad
• An intended change of programme and/or
discipline
