ECRO sponsored meeting

OLFACTORY
BIORESPONSE III

The meeting is going to take place in Dresden, Germany. It will begin on Tuesday, December 2nd, and end on Friday, December 5th, of 2003.

About the meeting:  The OLFACTORY BIORESPONSE III meeting is the third conference in a series of meetings which started in 1995 at the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Erlangen, Germany. The two previous meetings of this series of conferences have been received extremely well by all participants, largely because a major focus is on the interpersonal exchange between researchers.
The scientific focus of the meeting is on studies using electrophysiological and imaging techniques. Among other topics the 2003 meeting is going to highlight retronasal olfactory perception, olfaction in neurodegeneration, and qualitative olfactory dysfunction.

Location: It is organized by the Smell & Taste Clinic of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the University of Dresden Medical School, Fetscherstrasse 4, 01307 Dresden, Germany; phone +49-351-458-4189 or -3197. The conference venue will be at the facilities of the Max-Planck-Institute  for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, Pfotenhauerstrasse 108. Please click here to receive information how to get there.

Fee for participation is 110 Euro; students pay 35 Euro. Accompanying persons who would like to participate in the dinners only pay 40 euro per dinner. The fee should preferably be paid either by cheque or cash at the registration desk.

Deadline for registration is Monday, the 10th of November 2003. Please send an informal application including an abstract to Thomas Hummel. Please indicate whether you would like to partcipate in the dinners on Wednesday (3rd of Dec) and Thursday (4th of Dec)

Abstracts

The entire abstracts (including title, list of authors etc.) should have a maximal length of 2500 Characters (including spaces).

Abstracts should be organised as follows:

It is planned to publish the abstracts in Chemical Senses (although this is still a matter of discussion). Authors who do not wish do have their abstracts publsihed are asked to incidate this in a covering letter to Thomas Hummel. Abstracts can be submitted by email, snail mail, or fax.

von Skramlik award

Researchers in the area of human olfaction up to an age of 40 years are encouraged to apply for the von Skramlik award. The awardee will receive 3000 Euro.

Applicants are asked to send in a CV plus their most significant, peer-reviewed publication related to human olfaction which has been published in 2002 or 2003 or which has been accepted for publication. Applicants should be first author of this publication. Deadline for application is the 1st  of October 2003. Please send your applications plus a covering letter to Thomas Hummel.

Applications will be reviewed by the von Skramlik award committe consisting of Gerd Kobal, Gary Beauchamp, Claire Murphy, and Thomas Hummel. The awardee will be informed about the decision  by the 15th of October 2003. The awardee is expected to present his or her work at the BIORESPONSE III meeting in a 30 min lecture after which the award will be given out.

The von Skramlik award is given out to honor the work  of Emil von Skramlik, a German physiologist, who did most of his research in the beginning of the last century. Among his most important publications is the ìHandbook on the physiology of the lower sensesî (Handbuch der Physiologie der niederen Sinne. Leipzig: Georg Thieme press; 1926). The 2003 prize is generously sponsored by Firmenich, Geneva, Switzerland .

Travel awards

The European Chemoreception Organisation (ECRO) generously agreed to give out three travel awards to students or researchers who would like to attend the BIORESPONSE III meeting. Each award amounts to 500 Euro. Applicants are asked to send a CV, bibliography, accompanying letter and a letter of recommendation from the head of their institution to Prof. Otto Bulluzzi (Dipt. di Biologia, Via Borsari 46, 44100 Ferrara, Italy; Fax +390532 207143; ottorino.belluzzi@unife.it) until the 1st of October. A decision about the success of the application will be made by the ECRO board (for contact please turn to Dr. Otto Belluzzi). Applicants will be informed about the decision until the 15th of October.
