One of your international colleagues would like to share
some information and personal experience, which could be of
interest for young researches in Dresden.
Weiterbildung Zentrum at TU offers a series of courses
"Academic Writing", "Teaching in English" and "Presentation" by
Mrs. Mannion, a native-speaker of English who has lived in
Germany for 25 years and holds a Master in Interpreting and
Translating.
"I've just attended the first course of the series,
"Writing", and was flabbergasted by professionalism of the
trainer, therefore I want to pass the course information
around. This course explores subtleties of language and
style,
confusing cases of word usage, inner structure of a paper,
English punctuation, etc. It is oriented on young
scientists and teachers who already have some experience in
writing and presenting in English. I believe that this
target
audience is so far not broadly covered in Dresden, since the
majority of courses propose help to PhD's in writing their
thesis."
The forthcoming Teaching course will tackle the differencies in
evaluation and grading in Germany and Anglo-Saxon world, how to
reason and analyze while conveying a message to students, how
to assess the audience's response. For further information
please follow this link.
Such a course would also be helpful for those German young
lecturers who have mixed audiences and wonder how do they get a
message accross in the most efficient way. There are still
places available, so one can register on the webpage. The fee
is charged, but TU-associated people get reductions.
