Liability Insurance

In Germany, each person is held liable for damages to a third party and parents are liable for damage caused by their children. We therefore recommend taking out private (family) personal liability insurance to insure against claims arising from unintentional damages, especially if you come with your family or/and intend to stay longer than a year.

Some insurance companies offer combined health and personal liability insurance.

Accident insurance

Generally, all employees with a gross income below a certain level (2012: 45.900 Euro) automatically contribute to social security, which includes health insurance, long-term care insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance and accident insurance. State-regulated accident insurance protects you in the case of a work-related accident. This means that you are insured only on the way to and from work, and during work. After signing the contract with TU Dresden the university registers you with the appropriate Accident Prevention and Insurance Association and bears the accompanying costs.

In order to cover accidents that occur during your free time, we recommend that you take out private accident insurance.
If you have accident insurance in your home country, you should check with your insurance provider whether this will be valid in Germany and what it will cover.

PhD-Students at the TU Dresden already have accident insurance coverage for activities related to their studies. This coverage also includes participation in university sports.
