Health Insurance

Students from EEA (European Economic Area) Countries

Please obtain an International Insurance Card (EHIC - European Health Insurance Card) from your health insurance provider in your home country. Upon arrival in Germany, you will use your card to receive a certification from a state-run compulsory health insurance fund (Krankenkasse - e.g. at the „AOK Plus“ or the „TK“ – see below). They will confirm the validity of your coverage in Germany. You will receive a verification certificate to submit to the International Office.

Students from other countries

For all students who are not from EEA countries, and who are under the age of 30: you must obtain insurance from a state-run compulsory health insurance fund (Krankenkasse) in Germany (cost about 78 € a month).

A Travel insurance from your home country can not be accepted for the enrollment at the TU Dresden. Please only buy a Travel Insurance for the period of your arrival or if required as supplementary insurance for your period of study in Germany.

You may get this insurance at one of the following agencies located near the University:

  • Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse Dresden (AOK Plus Dresden)
Schnorrstraße 10/Ecke Fritz-Löffler-Straße (to the right of Studentenwerk), 01069 Dresden

  • Techniker Krankenkasse (TK)
    George-Bähr-Straße 8, 01069 Dresden

Students over 30

Students over 30 years of age are no longer obliged to provide proof of a health insurance (Krankenkasse).

At the University you are no longer required to show proof of insurance. However, all students from non-EU countries must present proof of insurance to the Foreign Resident’s Office (Ausländerbehörde).
Proof of insurance coverage will be accepted with a so called volontary insurance with one of the legal Health Insurances or with an oficially recognized private insurance company. Please inquire at the Foreign Reisdent’s Office for which insurance companies they will accept.
