Although the TU Dresden uses a multiplicity of different methods to assure the quality of teaching and learning, up to now a total quality management was missing.

In June 2009 the rectorial board initiated a group (Team Q) of professors, students and staff members under the leadership of the former Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Karl Lenz. The aim was to conceive a concept for a quality management system that follows the laws and the rules of the Accreditation Council for the system accreditation and therefore is adequate to replace the present obligation for the programme accreditation. During the concept development national and international best-practice examples of quality management systems in the higher education area were considered.

Based on the concept presented by the Team Q in spring 2011 the Principles of quality management in teaching and learning  were decided on 11^th May 2011 by the Senate and are now to be implemented.
